So as to indicate the structure of this fairly lengthy and extremely complex piece of prose made up of some 650 words covering 21 pages, Mallarmé uses different kinds of lettering. The main clause, printed in bold capitals, is interrupted after “jamais” by a subordinate clause in smaller capitals, which, in turn, is interrupted by a long and intricate passage in ordinary roman type.

2019-02-28 Stéphane Mallarmé worked as a lycée teacher at Tournon, Avignon and then Paris. His salon in the Rue de Rome became a rendezvous for young writers during the last fifteen years of his life. He was a friend of Degas. His verse often experiments with dislocated punctuation and grammar.
